You’ll find her in woodland
Rooting for worms
With talons as sharp as her nose -
A sociable animal, sharing her sett,
In her striking black and white clothes.

She’s quiet and private,
A wraith in the night,
A native of these ancient lands.
She features in folklore and old Gaelic myths
Yet she’s suffered so much at our hands:

She’s been baited and hunted
And tortured to death.
Her coat makes a most useful sporran.
Now they say she’s the cause of the spread of TB.
Our treatment of her is abhorrent.
