A remarkable creature, the frog;
Quite happy in lake, stream or bog,
Its rare procreation,
A real inspiration,
From spawn to adult, what a slog!
The tadpole can choose how to grow:
In the cool deep its progress is slow,
But stay in warm water
(With some risk of slaughter)
And metamorphosis is go!
In changing its form in this way
There are complex adjustments in play:
Growing arms, legs and spine,
Plus a skull in quick time,
Shedding tail, skin and gills on the way.
So this humble reptilian form,
With its habits so far from the norm,
Is one small revelation
Of nature's creation
Since earth's dark, mysterious dawn.
